About SHHH:
SHHH is determined to eradicate the stigma of admitting a hearing problem. People
with hearing loss wait an average 7 years before seeking help and 75 percent who
could benefit from wearing hearing aids are not using them. By age 65, 1 out of
3 people has a hearing loss and 33 newborns go home from the hospital every day,
with some degree of hearing loss.
We are proud of the efforts of our 250 affiliates located in towns like yours
and mine, advocating, educating, and helping one another with hearing loss.
Today SHHH is the largest consumer group of hard of hearing people in the United
States. There are currently more than 10,000 participants and members across the
United States.

HISTORY OF SHHH
SHHH was started in 1979 by Howard E. "Rocky"
Stone. He had a vision of an organization run by people with hearing loss and
benefiting people with hearing loss. He had a bilateral hearing loss at the age
of 19, and knew firsthand the difficulties caused by hearing loss.
Sacramento SHHL
Organized and started in Sacramento in 1979 by a
group of people who shared a common vision and, decided to, take action, SHHL is
nationally affiliated.
The Sacramento SHHL Chapter meets at the Nor Cal
Center on Deafness in Sacramento, CA on the second Saturday of every month
(except July and August) at 10:00 AM. Meetings are open to anyone with a concern
for, hearing loss and the associated problems that stem from not being able to
hear well. Through our meeting, attendees have made new friends, learned of
available resources and kept informed of legislative activities pertaining to
hearing loss.
If you have avoided group gatherings in the past because of hearing loss,
don't let that stop you from attending SHHH meetings. Communication
access is available at our meetings in the form of real-time
captioning and assistive
listening system. Everyone can participate in a SHHL meeting.
